When buying an area rug, the most common mistake is choosing one that's too small. For a harmonious look, the general rule is to let it extend 12" to 24" beyond your existing furniture on each side, depending on the size of your room. The larger your room, the more you can let your rug extend. Also, be careful not to let the rug reach the bottom of the walls.
Living room: Ensure that at least 12" extends beyond your furniture (sofas, armchairs, and coffee tables) and, at a minimum, that the front legs of the furniture rest on the rug.
Bedroom: Area rugs are usually placed in front of nightstands and under the bed, extending at least 18" all around the bed so you can enjoy its comfort barefoot.
Dining room: The rug must extend at least 8" on each side when the chairs are pulled out so that people are seated on them.
